i'd like to give some special attention to tortillas...
they are wonderful. on thursday i found tortilla heaven. it was a whole store solely for the making of tortillas. when laura and i went up to the counter, three tortilla angels or fairy godmothers of the tortilla were there waiting for us. i ordered 4. they looked at me a little strangely, and repeated cuatro? and held up 4 fingers. i nodded yes. i don't think people come in there for only 4 tortillas very often. i think it's a place to get a massive amount of them, but they were happy to give me 4, and some salsa. oh man was that salsa hot. i finished about a 1/4 of the salsa, then stuck it in the refrigerator. unfortunately it was not secured tightly enough on the shelf, so nicole was able to get salsa scented feet, sloddy. or i'm slutty. both work.
so i hear people call you sister...are you religious?
well actually janice, it's SISTA. so when people come up to me, they say, hey sista kat estas bien? then i say, estoy bien. at this point i repeat the question back to them. most of the time the answer is estoy bien. by this time, we are good and islike esta bien.
oh i see, well let me think that through while i chew my food, and laura stares at me.
we're back. man how 3 weeks flies by. all i can say is come on get higher, bounce around like vicente, talk like a canadian, run around like tabachin, repeat 7 things, 7 things, 7 things, dance like a drag queen, holler at yourself as you walk through the zocalo while someone reads your face, declare "this is the worst bus tour ever" before it begins, get some helado and nachos, buy lots of bird trinkets, throw spaghetti on the tile and jump around, then get on a plane and sit beside a crying 8 year old that wants his mama.
out of control, well maybe, but hey, chillax man, bring it down a notch, and touch you, because everything is, should be, and will be esta bien. no worries.

tortillas on my head, but don´t call me a tortilla head
this past tuesday, we had a pool party/ bracelet making/water balloon throwing/ football playing fiesta. about 30 kids from the neighborhood here in cuernavaca where ccidd visits, came. they were so excited to get in the pool. laura and i had not planned to get in, but when 5 girls surround you and pull on your hand, there is really no choice. so, in our tshirt and shorts, we braved the frigid water and jumped in. it didn´t matter that we didn´t speak spanish well, the hand motions for swimming and racing are universal. i became fast friends with sayruni, who loved to race to the deep end, grab hold of the side, and race back. she beat me every time.
after the swimming we moved on to making bracelets. it was chaos. thread everywhere, kids hollering in spanish about scissors and tape and beads and bellas. by the end of the fiesta, almost everyone was newly adorned with a bracelet or a necklace or some type of thread hanging from their body.
the fiesta ended with a water balloon ¨toss¨. they did not seem to grasp this concept and simply loved to throw the balloon in the air, and see if it could burst on someones head. they loved it. about 50 balloons disappeared in a matter of minutes. after the last balloon was thrown, the kids had to go. laura, nicole, and i got to ride on the van back with them. they had a great time screaming each other´s name on the count of uno, dos, tres. we even screamed HERMANA KATHY! this was the winner.
on wednesday, laura got sick. i think she stayed in the bed for about 14 hours straight. i knew one of us would probably succumb to the food at 0ne point, and the culprit, laura surmised, was kiwi ice-cream fom the zocolo. watch out. sister kathy came up to check on laura, and told her a doctor could come and give her a shot. where would the shot go? all i knew was that i did not want to know, but laura informed me that i would indeed by her side during this ordeal. thankfully, her condition improved, her stomach regained control, and we were able to go downstairs and eat cheese, run into glass doors, pull off car doors, talk to darla, throw frisbee with a boy who likes blondes in the park, hang out with regina, write islikearelagud on the sidewalk, talk with golom, and then roar like aslan. NICE.

ya, ya, ya, ya
a Catholic nun + a 27 year old Canadian schoolteacher + robots + spanish + an American movie + a Mexican cinema equals out of control.
a few nights ago Laura and I went with Sister Kathy, the nun that runs CCIDD, and Nicole, one of the other volunteers who is from Canada, to see WallE at the cinema. as we sat watching this movie in Spanish, it occured to me that here i was in a Mexican cinema with a nun and a Canadian watching an American movie about robots who were talking in Spanish. whoa. a combination that i dont think i will ever experience again.
this trip has been great so far. at times it feels like a missions trip and then a vacation, which isn^t all bad!
here{s, i cant figure out the contraction symbol and parenthesis on this keyboard!, some of what we have been up to.....we have been able to do some habitat work, and on thursday we helped cement the floor of this house in a poorer section of Cuernavaca. there were no cement trucks, and the mixing of the gravel, sand, cement mix, and water was all done by hand and then carried in buckets into the house. it was a community effort, and it was neat to see young boys, older women, and men helping this elderly couple finally have a cement floor. we have also been painters. we painted the outside of the garage at the center, and i felt like tom sawyer. i tried to ask Vicente, who is one of the men who works here, if he knew tom sawyer, but all i got was a i dont understand look and laughter. alot of the conversation with the staff here consists of hand motions, laughter, and alot of smiling.
today we went with some kids from La Estacion to this mountain about 30 minutes from the city. they sang to me the Mexican equivalent of the happy birthday song, and it was wonderful. when we got there, we learned it was a 2km hike up the side of the mountain. it was hard!, but the view at the top was beautiful. on the way up the mountain, Nicole was struggling. Alex, one of the girls who went, said it was consequences. i asked her what she meant, and she said consquences of cerveza. i almost died laughing. when she got to the top of mountain, she didnt admire the beauty all around, but simply said that sucked. when we got to the bottom, and the kids said they could go back up again, she said hell no! this trip would be missing alot of humor without her. Sister Kathy found her remark especially funny. side note...on our way back home she told Nicole when we passed this store that is sold all types of tequila. she said if you walk in and look around they give you free shots of tequila. she recommended the cocunut and strawberry. whoa.
Alex, taught me all kinds of Spanish words. the whole way there she would say this is how you say this in espanol. we covered streets, fruits, types of cars, and even speed bumps. you name it, and i heard it today. she was great. on our way down the mountain she asked me, tienes hambre. i replied no, i dont have a novio or boyfriend. she gave me a puzzled look, and i immediately realized that that meant are you hungry and not do you have a man or a boyfriend! hahaha i was embarassed, but she didnt laugh too much! the group sat down in an outdoor market type place and we ate some sheep tacos, yum. on the way back to the city, we played punch bug. Marcella had a good time punching Laura, and screaming BOCHO ROJO!
when we got back, Laura and I went to mass with Sister Kathy. it was all in spanish, and somebody behind me kept yelling Kimi, Kimi, it{s true. there was this little girl in front of us, who never sat still the whole time. she would walk on the pew and pull everyones hair. she was out of control, but her parents did not seem to care.
afterwards we got some Burger King. i felt so much like an American, but it was great. however, when we got back to the center and after we ate, we put our leftovers in the refrigerator, and something about Burger King wrappers beside homemade Mexican food did not seem to fit.
oh by the way, there is a song here that repeats muy, muy many times. it reminds me of more, more. i love it, islikearelagud.

hey you, gringo!
oh man, i´m in mexico. i didn´t think i´d be able to get on the internet, but we got lucky. we got here on monday. it took a plane ride, a boat ride, a pack mule, and some walking. haha just kidding. the airplane ride was great, besides the 3 year old with the dirty diaper hollering for his milky before we even took off and the airline attendent asking did we want headSETS, headSETS and asking every single row if they wanted a duty free magazine...
the best way i can describe cuernavaca is to say it´s a beautiful mess. there is so much color everywhere, on the buildings, on the streets, on the people. and the weather is beautiful. people drive like i´ve never seen, but there are no accidents. i don´t think there are yield signs, and maybe a few stop signs.
we went to the people´s market yesterday. the only way i can describe this is to say it´s a big open warehouse where there is so much food ranging from cactus leaves, squah, pork skin, chicken feet, mole, and even whole pig heads. while we were there we got the standard gringo remark, a hey you, and laura even got a whats up white girl! classy.
i was here at the end of february so i knew what the city looked like, and the place where i would be staying. the center is great. home to alot of glass doors. one of the girls here ran into the door. i am not even kidding. it was awesome.
the poverty in parts of cuernavaca is mind blowing. the place we are staying is a luxurious resort compared to the houses that many live in. i´m not sure what these 3 weeks will bring, but i hope to be able to keep you updated.
the cakies here are great...i saw a store with the name nancy on it (i took a picture)...i called joyce and asked about ham, what ham?...oh yeah, and escomomuybueno.

how is abc...relagud
It started out as 4 words
Which then grew into one word
Which then turned into a NICE saying
Which then turned into one word with a hand motion
And then that word grew louder and louder
Til it was a battle cry..with the nice hand
It'll come back
When you say it
No matter the context it’s always relagud
Just because it takes practice
Doesn't mean it's never
Been this way before
All you can do is try to do it
When your friends pass
As you head off to class
Pick a person across the mall
And give them the wave
They'll say is likearelagud
Then they'll give you the nice hand
No need to say separate words
It’ll solve all your problems
When you feel down
You’ll need to say straight up
Now we're back to the beginning
Islike a word and everyone should know
But just because they may not say islike all the time
Doesn't mean that it's wrong
Let your hand wave grow stronger and stronger
Til it’s before your eyes…then add a dip in your knees
It will be nice
When they see you
No need to say good bye
You’ll become relagud
When you say it
No need to say straight down
credit for the origin of this word-the long, lean boots with the kirk and the abler.
papa: forever will come soon, it's straight all directions plus a nap
barracuda: there's some nast in your face, and oh sorry, i just dozed off for a bit
deanna: more of this to come next year
shoot girl: i hope you've been wearing your baseball cap
sin and mdiv: stop eating all the biscuits
Which then grew into one word

tienes panecillos? sloddy.
there are now 3 turtle nests at the beach. mary's e-mails have gotten slightly more hopeful, i was worried. whew.
i'm still working on getting up in the mornings. i just can't seem to do it. lil mama has been given a rest, and now i've got natalie grant singing about living for today. all i want to do is be living for my bed a little longer. i'll get out there one morning before i leave the beach, at least that's the plan.
i know there have been some thrilling posts about turtles, but i've realized that this blog is made up entirely of jokes. i created this blog as a joke to begin with in response to a legitimate blog that was made by a moofin. can you believe it? a moofin.

i would like to expand my blog's content, and legitimize my blog. i'm not sure what that means, but i'm headed to mexico in a few days, and maybe some posts that make sense will result. probably not. i think i'll just type in spanish what i've already posted in english. or maybe i'll describe the difference in a cuernavacan tortilla from that of a north carolina one. that would be exciting.
don't worry, i'll keep you posted. literally. isn't that funny, i'm bleedding, can you help me find me eye?

Let me get my febreeze, so we can take your shoes off.

I rock white tees on my head but don’t call me a white tee head.
Bees on my head but don’t call me a bee head.
Tommy on my head but don’t call me a Tommy head.
Now please excuse me, I gots to get my frisbee fed.
You wear black visors, and I make my own hot chocolate..stains.
I hang out with a sandwich who loves self-loathing.

“I love chicken.”
Glass doors on my face makes me extra happy.
I like crossword puzzles that sit on my lappy.
Cause it’s my show you can’t tell me what to do.
When life hands me lemons I make a big muffler.
So yo I gotta go, it’s time for me to rock it.
I put fat guys in little coats in my left pocket.
Smear some cigars in my gold locket.
Cause it’s my show I’m resdarant pawlecee.
It’s my show I’m spittle in your face.
It’s my show I’m isn’t that funny

p.s. kimmy wanted to tell darla that her postcard was wonderful, and a thank you could be summed up, and the laughter it caused by comparing it to saying your name or anyone else's name several octaves lower than normal....while tripping.

i have failed in my recent attempts to get up in the mornings and look for turtle tracks.
the alarm clock goes off at 5:45 blaring lip gloss by lil mama. i'm not sure why i have this ringtone, but do not get confused, this is a ringtone and not a realtone, so it is not actual singing just techno rings set to the beat of my "lip gloss is cool my lip gloss be poppin' i'm standin at my locker and all the boys keep stoppin". it's a song devoted entirely to lip gloss and it's pretty great....
anyways, lil mama wakes me up and i just can't get out of the bed. my legs won't move. my thoughts drift to the potential sighting of a turtle or the remnants of her journey onto the sand and into the dunes. however, my body doesn't react, and i set lil mama back a few hours.
i got another e-mail from mary. she's the lady in charge of the sea turtle nests. the e-mail was a little somber. apparently the least number of nests on the beach ever was 9 and the most was 28. needless to say, she was upset that not one nest had been found on this part of the island. she loves turtles, and i hope at least some will come.
i did have a pretty spectacular encounter yesterday afternoon. i was swimming out in the ocean, not something i do alot because i don't like to step on things and i'm scared of sharks, but i decided i'd give it a try. well i was out there, and you would never believe who i saw. i felt something on my leg, so i looked down, and there he was, all the way from the eastern australian current, crush. he had drifted to the nc shore after telling nemo and dori he had to alert the island. he told me not to worry, the turtles were coming.
so for now i lead a tough life at the beach, waiting for the turtles.

ocean creatures
ranger dan --->he and sofie share a special connection. i can only assume that ranger dan is a very experienced turtle protector. he will be my inspiration as i embark on this summer turtle experience.
i am on the e-mail list for the turtle volunteers. there are alot of people who are very passionate about turtles, and they report about what they see. turtle tracks, crawls, and nests. these people are very precise, and it is a real treat if a turtle nests on their section of the beach! there is alot of asking for crossing your fingers and hoping the turtles will come.
i don't know anything about sea turtles! i figured if i'm going to get up in the morning and try to locate some crawls and nests that first i need to know what they look like. i did some research, saw some pictures, and read some facts.
one of the websites was titled, Turtle FAQ, and in the website was a section called, "What should I do if I see a nesting loggerhead". i thought this would be some useful information so i read on. the first piece of advise was to stay away from the turtle and not handle the eggs. i thought well that doesn't sound to hard, so i continued reading and this is what came next:
Do not handle or ride the sea turtle. In addition to being illegal, you may injure the turtle or cause her to leave without finishing nesting.
i almost died.
i'm glad they cleared that up, because i was going to go out there with my lasso and reins. guess that's no longer an option.
this warning was followed by:
Do enjoy the experience and remember it for the rest of your life.
this website sure knows how to cover the emotion spectrum.
so begins the turtle quest.

blogs are taking over the world.

today i was sitting listening to a speaker, and he was talking about bloggers vs. non-bloggers. in the paper this morning, there was a whole article devoted to blogging. ellen was talking about blogs on her show, well not really but she will soon, not to worry. this cocker spaniel started barking blog links at me as i walked by. i was in a bathroom, and on the stall door there was a blog address, no longer the ricky loves tina, blogs are the new scratch in subjects of public restrooms. on my sandwich bun, someone had written their blog website with ketchup, and i don't even like ketchup. songs are incorporating blogs with the word blog echoed in the chorus. i was even walking down the street in indianapolis and this man yelled, "hey! go check out my blog!". what...
i was thinking now this is pretty strange, but i decided i'd go and see what it said.
so i went to the blog and this is what i found....

i'm like a vault, locked down......with no air, air, air
will this ever get old.....maybe.....nah, never. courtesy of jordin, with a twist (for accurate lyrics consult elsewhere):
But how do you, darla, expect kimmy
To live alone (besides peter) with just kimmy
Cause my laugh revolves around you it's so hard for me to breathe (or eat boogles)
Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air (moofins)
Can't laugh can't float with no moofins
It's how I feel whenever you (darla) arent there
Theres no moofins no moofins!
Got me out here in the water so nasty (it's in your face)
Tell me how you gone roar without kimmy
If you aint here I just can't laugh
Theres no moofins no moofins
No moofins No moofins (not even cakies)

hanuman

this entry goes out to the one and only baby white furred tail wagging hanuman. bare with me:
one day i met this crazy monkey in mumbai, india. she went by the name hanuman and had the coolest tail you had ever seen. i thought to myself wow, she even rescued sita from ravana and still had time to be a champ at every sport. hanuman wore caps all the time, and was always running around, her tail bouncing in the air as she looped around campus. i could always tell hanuman was near because of her laugh and she always carried orange cones. she was forever on the lookout for pebbles, and as soon as she saw one she would holler PEBBLE and put the cones around the giant tripping obstacle. everyone around was eternally grateful. she also posted stickers and happy faces, along with the words clean and shiny, on every glass window she saw. due to her diligence there was a minimal loss of eyes and blood. i will never forget this one time she helicoptered in (the traffic was bad). hanuman was never one to waste toilet paper, even if people thought she had a party in the bathroom due to the streamers. she would just calmy haul the cheese wheel roll outside, but not before she faked out the automatic flusher. those things are tricky, but she managed to move at just the right time. skill, practice, and determination. be careful with the other monkeys, show 'em whose boss, and who has the better tail.

i feel way over my head trying to make a blog. i'm not the most computer savvy person, so i don't know how this is going to turn out. i had never thought much about blogs until this boogle started working on hers for this trip to somewhere far far away. as i sit here i just don't know what to have in this blog- immediately thoughts of ellen quotes, raps from andy milonakis, or a shrine to tommy boy dance in my head but wait, i've got it- this blog will be devoted to the one and only darla loving roaring bam yelling laughing wingy.so here i go, here i go, what's my weakness men (oh sorry, wrong song, i dozed off for a bit), am i in ireland, what? i hope you can keep up:
one day i yelled across the hall. the door was open, but i could not see anyone. typical. i stuck my head in, and who would have believed it, a cakie eater doing a crossword pushed up against the wall in the chair. i immediately yelled darla, endured a few choice nicknames beginning with b, and rode off into battle with prince caspian. he dropped me off at atlanta bread where golom was sipping hot chocolate. they were out of bellas, so i got a moofin and sat down. a visor wearing chuckler came in and sat beside me. we started to name the 50 states. we got about 26, and then realized that someone was hollering more more. i yelled back enough enough, and a high pitched laugh exploded and we were surrounded by dogs. these dogs had wandered into some nast on the green river. luckily they had escaped the fat boy in the tube and the barracudas, whew. we left abc after 15 hours, but not before we saw the third grader from the park. he yelled at sally (he likes blondes). girl next door was blasting all around, and a police man pulled us over and said, listen, son, roll around on the ground, roll around on the ground. we obliged, and before we knew it, wings had arrived, and a toy car was on fire with the new guy puking in the corner. all this time, regina sang on and on about feelings, and hope. in the mean time i'll bide my time wondering doctor or lawyer? backwards hat or no hat? or funny or smart? until august.
